Mark Changizi is a cognitive scientist who researches advertising. He has found that visual exposure to branded products is enhanced when the exposure occurs without conscious recognition. This subtle type of advertising is used by companies that have their products strategically placed in certain settings within movies and TV shows. The viewer is exposed to their branded product, influenced positively, and isn’t even aware it is happening.
We are being influenced to love the world without even knowing it.
In the above verse, the Apostle John makes it very clear that we should not love the world. He goes on to state that if anyone does love the world, the love of the Father is not in them.
Loving the world and loving God is not a possibility.
Those of us who desire to love God thus inherently have an ongoing battle to wage. We must battle against becoming too attached to the things of the world. We should struggle to resist advertising that is both subtle and obvious. We must also fight the battle to be accepted by others. Each of us desperately wants to “fit in”, which means to some degree…fitting into the world.
We have to resist these temptations if we are going to progress in our walk with Jesus. This requires becoming more aware of how the world is influencing us.
Are our purchases based upon a clearly defined need or on an unspecified desire? Are we in touch with how our purchasing patterns are influenced by the possessions of our friends? Are we aware of how subtle advertising is influencing us?
Our love of the world is expressed in additional ways besides our purchasing habits. It is also expressed through how we spend out time. We have the choice to spend our free time doing something that builds us up, or exposes us to the values of the world. We can limit the impact that subtle advertising can have on us, or foolishly believe we are immune to such effects. Be careful…the world is trying to capture you.
Prayer: Lord help me become more aware of the many ways the world is influencing me, and give me the wisdom and strength to resist.
