Living Free

Living-Free“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.”       1 Peter 2:16 (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

Audio              (3:29)

Covenant Eyes estimates that 85% of young men and 50% of young women use pornography monthly. Having researched pornography use among Christians and non-Christians, they have found that 50% of Christian men and 20% of Christian women say they are addicted to porn.

Addiction to pornography is growing at an alarming rate because of its accessibility through the Internet and indirectly because of efforts to maintain the freedom to access Internet content. The Internet has many wonderful benefits for us today, but it also has a dark side as well.

Repeated use of pornography can actually change the way our brain functions. Neural pathways are developed and strengthened through the regular viewing of pornography that subsequently enhances the desire for sex.

Pornography does not satisfy the desire for sex…it fuels it.

With addiction to pornography, the degree of stimulation necessary to achieve satisfaction of the addiction over time increases so that addiction to pornography often progresses to acting out in ways that are harmful.

Medical students, residents and practicing physicians are not immune to this problem.

The words of Peter in the passage for today speak directly to this issue. We are blessed to live in a world that provides more freedom than almost anytime in history. With the freedom we possess and the easy accessibility of evil, we must be careful not to use our freedom to participate in that evil.

The alternative Peter lays out for us is to live as servants of God. We should remember that we are not just servants, but beloved servants! The beloved servant does what their master wants, not just because they have to, but because they want to!

Serving God actually brings us great pleasure…far more pleasure than participating in evil. There is no greater joy than knowing that you are doing the Master’s will and thus having an impact in your world.

If you are struggling with some form of hidden sin, seek out help and accountability from a trusted friend. God will provide the resources you need.

Prayer: Lord help me resist the secret sins that are so readily accessible to me today. Instead, lead me in the path that You have laid out for me!
