Knowing God’s love

Man in heart“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”           1 John 4:16 (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

John is often referred to as the Apostle of Love, and it’s easy to understand why. His writings are filled with references and commands regarding love. In this particular verse, John points out a critical truth for us if we are going to flourish as followers of Jesus.

John writes that we should come to know and believe the love that God has for us.

It is one thing to “know” in a very general and intellectual way that God loves us. It is something entirely different to know this love in an experiential sense. God’s love for us is as real as the ground we walk on, but in order for God’s love to transform our hearts and our lives, we must come to know that love experientially.

It is not uncommon for someone to have a powerful conversion experience in which they sense God’s love and presence in a mighty way. However, with the passing of time and the busyness of life, the memory of that experience can fade, and the knowledge of God’s love becomes a distant memory that no longer has any impact in our life today.

We are creatures built by God to know and carry His love. As Pascal once famously wrote, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every person that can never be filled by any created thing.”

We are incomplete until we know and believe the love that God has for us. We can be competent and efficient in our practice of medicine, but our ability to have a spiritual impact will be limited.

If that love seems dry and distant, take time to reconnect with the fact that God dearly loves you…far more than you can imagine. Allow the knowledge of that love to penetrate deeply, not only in your mind, but also in your heart so that it becomes a perpetual well of love flowing out to all you encounter.

Abide in His love…

Prayer: Lord remind me today of the vast love you have for me, so that I can share Your love with those in need around me.
