Abundant Life

hope“I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”  John 10:10 (The Message)

Chapter         (The Message)

Audio              (ESV- 4:44)

Jesus didn’t come to condemn us. He didn’t come to judge us.

Jesus came to give us life.

Not just any life. He came to give us abundant life…far better than we ever dreamed…and a life that lasts an eternity.

Unfortunately, many mistakenly believe this abundant life begins when we get to heaven.

But Jesus never said that.

Jesus simply said that He came to give us life…abundantly. Why shouldn’t that life start when we come to faith in Him?

When we became new Christians, we experienced a joy that filled our souls and overflowed as excitement to share our newfound faith with others. But with time, that excitement diminished and very often, so did that joy. The reality of life came rushing in from all sides, stealing that excitement and joy, and many of us are still searching to recover it.

Others have fallen asleep.

The good news is, not only is it possible to recover that initial joy and excitement, but the Lord wants us to live that way…all the time.

If the Lord wants us to live abundantly, and the abundant life has many wonderful benefits to offer us…why don’t all Christians live that abundant life?

The simple answer is that our efforts to achieve the abundant life are being opposed.

This opposition arises from 3 different sources. We are being opposed by a spiritual enemy, by the world that surrounds us, and by our own self-centered nature.

These enemies oppose us in our efforts to achieve peace or shalom in our relationship with God, in our relationships with others, and lastly, in our relationship with ourselves.

In order to achieve that shalom and experience the abundant life, we must overcome all three sources of opposition. To overcome these sources of opposition, we must first understand them. We will start first with understanding our own self-centered nature.

That step begins next week.

For today and this weekend, take some time to meditate on what you truly believe about this passage. Do you believe that Jesus came to give you abundant life and that He meant for this life to begin now?

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You came to give me a better life than I ever dreamed of.
