Jesus has reinforced for us that the greatest commandment from God is to love Him with ALL our hearts, soul and mind.
But stop and think about it…can you ever command love?
Intuitively, we know that you can never command someone to love you. Yet, here is God commanding us to love Him COMPLETELY. We cannot and will not truly love God if our response to this commandment arises from fear or blind obedience. To move toward loving God completely, we must first understand why God makes loving Him a commandment.
God commands us to love Him because loving Him is what is best for us.
The commandment for us to love God does absolutely nothing for God.
The commandment for us to love God does everything for us.
The commandment for us to love God is our salvation and our path to the abundant life. God commands us to love Him supremely because that is the only way we will truly find life.
The problem is…in much of our lives we don’t really believe this.
We believe that God created us, loves us, and has provided the way for us to enter heaven. But that satisfaction comes later. For now…we turn to the things in the world to satisfy us.
We learn to love the world. And unfortunately, for many of us, our love for the world begins to outgrow our love for God.
It isn’t that we shouldn’t love things in this world. But our love for anyone or anything outside of God should be secondary to His love.
Here is the key…
Our love for anyone or anything outside of God should exist because of our love for God.
We learn that all good things that come to us are gifts from God, so that with each blessing we receive, we love God more.
God is the source of all that is good…not our own meager efforts.
Even our opportunity and ability to work in medicine comes from God.
Only by loving everything else because of our love for God can we love Him completely.
Prayer: Lord, show me who or what I’m loving more than You.
