Experiencing God

Strawberries“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” Psalm 34:8 (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

Audio              (2:02)

As we examine what it means to love God with ALL our hearts, souls, mind and strength, we must examine the source of our love for God.

Love for God doesn’t arise out of intellectual belief.

Love for God doesn’t arise out of inherited tradition.

Love for God doesn’t arise out of reluctant obedience.

Love for God arises through our experience of Him.

We must taste and see that the Lord is good.

God through the Psalmist is inviting us to experience Him. When we taste a strawberry, we are applying our sense of taste to that strawberry. We experience the strawberry, and if we like strawberries, we experience pleasure. We find that strawberries are good.

The Psalmist is using the metaphor of taste to describe the action of opening ourselves up to God…to experience Him. Just as we can’t taste that strawberry until we put it into our mouth, we must open ourselves to the possibility of experiencing God before we can recognize Him. Many of us have already experienced God, but didn’t realize it when it happened.

The experience of God may take any number of forms because God will be experienced only in the way He wants to be experienced. We may sense the still small voice of God within us. We might experience a sense of His presence as we enjoy the beauty of nature. We may feel a sense of His pleasure as we engage in the work He has given us. The experience of God is always positive. Even in discipline, God’s loving hand is gentle and working for our good.

As we experience God and His goodness, we experience pleasure and our love for Him grows.

Have you noticed that your love for God has been stifled lately? Has that love grown cold due to busyness or distraction with worldly responsibilities? Don’t worry. He waits like the father of the prodigal son for us to turn back to Him.

He waits for you to slow down.

Ask the Lord to allow you to experience Him today. Then take a few extra minutes to listen for His small voice, or sense His presence as you enjoy His beauty.

Prayer: Lord make Your presence known to me today!
