“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Eph. 4:22-24 (NIV)
We continue to grow into our new identity in Christ as we continue to put on our new self. This new self was given to us when we received Christ. It was imparted to us through the Holy Spirit.
Paul tells us an amazing thing about this new self.
It is created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Think about that…your new self was created to attain the righteousness and holiness of God.
This must be true because as we saw last week, God’s plan is for us to become like Christ. And Christ was truly righteous and holy.
Paul tells us that part of this process occurs through being made new in the attitude of our minds. In Romans 12:2, Paul refers to this as the renewing of our minds.
Part of the process of becoming righteous and holy involves changing the way we think about ourselves, others, and God. Since we were born into a fallen humanity, our thinking is also fallen.
We perceive and evaluate our world incorrectly.
Therefore our minds must be renewed.
The first step to renewing our mind is realizing that our minds need to be renewed. The renewing of our minds is hindered to the degree that we believe we are already thinking correctly about God and ourselves.
Therefore, we must develop an attitude of skepticism toward our own thinking and test it against the Bible. If there is any discrepancy, we must allow our thinking to be shaped by Scripture.
This will be difficult for us as physicians. We are taught to practice medicine according to existing scientific evidence and this should not change.
But there is a difference between the practice of medicine and the way we live our life.
Practice medicine according to the evidence.
Practice life with humility and a mind open to God’s leading.
Then you will progressively put on your new self.
Prayer: Lord help me be humble and open to Your leading as I seek to become more like Christ.
