“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” Rom. 8:14-17 (ESV)
As we continue to examine our new identity in Christ, today’s Scripture reminds us that those who are indwelled by the Holy Spirit are children of God. The same God who made us and has called us His servants, has also chosen to call us His children.
He has adopted us into His family.
My worth in this universe is not based upon the fact that I am a physician. It is not based upon how much money I make, or how popular I am with others.
My value in this universe is based upon the fact that I am a child of the Creator.
Having 3 children of my own, I know that my love for them is far greater than my love for friends and other relatives. There are also many rights that I have given to my children that don’t belong to those outside our immediate family.
The relationship between parent and child is a very special and close relationship.
And we have that relationship with God.
And just as parents allow special access to their children, we now have special access to God.
That special access is called the indwelling Holy Spirit.
We have the capability to experience and commune God on a continual basis…if only we attune ourselves to His presence.
And finally, just as my children will inherit whatever possessions my wife and I leave behind, we as children of God have an inheritance.
That inheritance is heaven and all it’s glory.
I will receive that inheritance because I am a son… not because of any good works done in this world.
How much of your identity comes from what you do rather than who you are?
Prayer: Lord help me to remember that my worth and significance come from the fact that I am now Your adopted child.
