Bride of Christ

Chapter         (ESV)

Last week I pointed out that Scripture describes our relationship with God using three different analogies. We briefly examined that we are God’s servants as well as God’s children.

Today we examine the last analogy, which is the most intimate and amazing.

Scripture tells us we are the bride of Christ.

When God sought to describe to us our new relationship with Him, He chose the most intimate human relationship possible. He chose the relationship of husband and wife.

As we continue to renew our minds with our new identity in Christ, we should be overwhelmed with the realization that the Creator of the universe compares our relationship with Him to that of husband and wife.

Between two humans, there is no more intimate relationship.

What is truly amazing is that God actually seeks to relate to us even more intimately than what we experience in marriage. He uses that relationship to describe this intimacy because there is no other human relationship He can use.

He can only describe something on the basis of our own experience. He has purposefully taken the most intimate relationship we can humanly experience and tells us that our relationship with Him will be at least that intimate.

I have been married to my wife for over 36 years and I love her dearly. To imagine that God sees my relationship with Him in those terms and even beyond is staggering.

And yet…so often I worry about what someone else thinks of me…when at the same time I am engaged and dearly loved by the Creator!

We certainly don’t deserve this kind of love and intimacy, but it just more fully reveals His grace and mercy to us.

This depth of love and intimacy should seize us and bring us to our knees. It should capture our hearts and cause us to put aside every false idol in our lives.

It should cause us to fully open ourselves to Him.

Spend some time today simply enjoying and basking in His love.

Prayer: Lord, I am overwhelmed with the way that You love me. Help me fully experience Your love so that I may properly respond!
