“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:1-5 (NIV)
We gain another insight into the way to wisdom in the latter section of this passage in Proverbs.
The writer instructs us to ‘call out’ for insight and ‘cry aloud’ for understanding.
James showed us last week that wisdom comes from heaven. Its true source is God. So we are told to call out to God for insight and cry aloud to Him for understanding.
In other words, though only God can give us wisdom…we are told to actively pursue it.
To call out or cry aloud, we must use our voice. We must use our voice to ask.
In addition, by calling out and crying aloud…we make known to those around us that we are actively seeking wisdom. We aren’t keeping it a secret. We are communicating to others that we need wisdom, desire wisdom and are seeking wisdom.
God will give wisdom to those who pursue it.
God doesn’t grant wisdom to someone on the basis of how long they have been following Him.
He doesn’t grant wisdom on the basis of our attendance in church.
God grants wisdom to those who cry out for it.
Therefore, if we want to grow in wisdom, we need to actively pursue wisdom.
We need to make seeking wisdom a priority in our lives.
Otherwise, we will grow old in Christ without growing wise in Christ.
In addition, this passage tells us to pursue wisdom as if we were searching for silver or a hidden treasure.
Someone searching for hidden treasure is relentless. They never give up. They are motivated by the reward they will receive once they find the treasure. They keep searching until they find what they are looking for.
Wisdom is a treasure.
Wisdom is a treasure of incalculable worth…given without charge.
Given without charge…but not without cost.
Call out for insight…cry aloud for understanding…and He will give it.
Prayer: Lord, I cry out to You for desperately needed wisdom.
