“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might…”. Proverbs 24:3-5 (ESV)
As the writer of Proverbs continues to help us understand the fruits of wisdom, we learn in today’s verse that it is through wisdom that a house is built.
The original word translated as house here includes the idea of family.
It is through wisdom that a family is built…and through understanding that a family is established.
Anyone who has raised children knows that nothing else in life requires more wisdom and understanding. This is especially true when the children reach the teenage years and their testing of authority reaches new heights!
Anyone can “raise” children, but it takes wisdom and understanding to establish them.
The word translated as “establish” has a variety of meanings, but the theme is to properly fashion something so that it will be stable…able to withstand the forces that come against it. To establish a family is to make it stable…able to withstand the inevitable attacks that come from both within and without.
One of the notorious issues that surrounds us in medicine is the fact that we are too busy. We never seem to have the necessary time to spend with our family. This means that we need to make the most of the time we have.
Wisdom helps us use our limited time skillfully.
In addition to being pressed for time, as we endeavor to establish our home, we come under the attack of our enemy. As those inevitable attacks come, wisdom reminds us of the assurance we find in Romans 8:28 that God will use those attacks to further strengthen us and increase our endurance.
Wisdom takes the seemingly negative and recognizes it as a positive.
Finally, as Christian parents, one of our most important tasks is to pass our faith onto our children. This is not easy in today’s world…filled with distraction and entertainment that pulls them in other directions.
Wisdom is required…and provides critical help to us as we seek to build and establish our house.
Prayer: Lord, pour out Your wisdom on me to enable me to build my house.
