God and Work

establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.” Psalm 90:17 (NIV)

Chapter         (NIV)

Audio              (2:03)

One of the most common areas for us to compartmentalize in our life is our work. By compartmentalize I mean to separate off from the complete control of Jesus Christ.

This is equally true for us working in the field of medicine.

A common assumption we often make is that all God requires of us as Christian physicians is to practice medicine with integrity, competence and compassion.

Of course, He wants us to practice with integrity, competence and compassion. But that’s not all.

He wants us to surrender our practice to Him.

But what does that look like? Practically, it means starting every day with the attitude that the Lord is in charge of our professional life. After all, we are ultimately under His authority and our ability to practice medicine is the result of His grace and mercy in our lives.

Practically, there are 4 categories within our work that we need to continually turn over to Him. Those 4 categories are our worries, our frustrations, our rewards, and our goals.

When we turn them over to Christ, it doesn’t mean we abandon all responsibility. It means that we recognize and give Him ultimate control over these 4 areas.

For instance, in medicine we can worry about things like patient outcomes, complications, and lawsuits. But it’s helpful to remember that there is only so much we can control in medicine. We control the level in which we practice medicine with integrity, competence, and compassion. We can’t control patient outcome or patient reaction.

These areas we leave to God.

As a surgeon, today’s verse was always especially meaningful to me. It helped remind me that it is God who is truly able to establish the work of my hands. I may at times fool myself that I am in control of my professional life…but there is a different reality.

It is God who is ultimately in control.

The more completely I understand that simple fact…the less reason for worry.

If we continue to daily surrender our lives to Him…He will carry out His plan.

Prayer: Lord remind me daily that ultimately You are in control and Your plan is unfolding as You desire.
