“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Cor. 6:19,20 (NIV)
Today’s verse opens for us the topic of stewardship. Stewardship is usually talked and written about in the context of money, but as today’s verse alludes, stewardship involves many other things besides our financial resources.
The reasoning behind stewardship is that everything we have…we have received from God. Therefore, we are to use what He has given us in ways that are pleasing and honoring to Him.
This includes our financial resources, our time, the talents He has bestowed upon us, and yes…even our very own bodies.
This includes the education and intellect that enables us to practice medicine.
We are in medicine because God has allowed us to be in medicine…not because we somehow earned it ourselves.
It was God who gave us the ability to become educated.
It was God who opened the opportunity for us to get our education.
It was God who gave us the personality to endure the rigors of medical education and complete the necessary steps to be able to practice medicine.
We are healthcare professionals because God has enabled us to be healthcare professionals.
This is a critical realization and attitude for the Christian physician, because without it, there is no sense of stewardship.
Instead, there is entitlement.
If we believe we have earned our education and professional credentials, we will feel entitled to use them as we please. We will demand to be in control of our professional career.
Paul reminds us that this is not the case.
Paul reminds us that as Christians and followers of Jesus, we no longer belong to ourselves. We have been purchased by Him and therefore belong to Him.
When we fully understand that we belong to Him, we will not just understand stewardship…we will become stewards.
We won’t have to be reminded of our need to give…we will naturally look for ways to share out of what God has given us.
Which are you today…entitled or steward?
Prayer: Lord, remind me daily that all I have…I have received from You!
