“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Eph. 5:1-2 (NIV)
As we continue our examination of the relationship between faith, hope, and love, I want to return to aspect of time. Previously I’ve written that faith is based on past events, and our hope is based on the future.
Love happens in the present.
As followers of Jesus, we are called to love…now.
We have no control over what happened 2000 years ago, and we certainly don’t have any control over what will happen surrounding the return of Christ.
Our control is very limited…to ourselves…in the present.
We didn’t write the story of Israel.
We won’t write the story of His return.
But we do write the story of our life.
Though God is the Creator of the universe and could easily make us His slaves, He has given us the freedom to write the story of our lives.
We can choose to write that story with the theme of self-love, or with the theme of sacrificial love.
Paul reminds us what sacrificial love looks like…it looks like the life of Christ.
The choice of how to write our story is not made just once in our life without the chance to change the theme.
We choose the theme of our story daily…throughout the day.
If we start the day with the wrong theme…we can change it at any time.
It’s not uncommon that I start the day with one theme and end it with the other.
But each new day is a new start…a fresh chance to choose the right theme.
Once again…it is a process.
That’s why Paul writes about “walking in love”.
It is a process that involves choice…continual choice…hopefully choosing the theme of self-sacrifice over the theme of self-love.
And as we choose self-sacrifice…we come to be more like Jesus.
What kind of story do you want to write today?
Will it be a story of self-sacrifice for your family, patients, and colleagues…or a story with the theme of self-love?
Prayer: Lord, empower me to make the story of today a story of self-sacrifice in obedience to You.
