This week I’ve referenced several Scripture verses around the theme of continual prayer.
Paul preached and practiced continual prayer.
Continual prayer allows us to experience the all-encompassing presence of God, no matter where we are and what we are doing.
However, continual prayer in our ever increasingly busy and distracted world is impossible to achieve on our own.
We need God’s help to tune into His presence and push out all the distractions around us. But even before that…we need to have the desire to experience His ongoing presence. Until our hearts long for the presence of God, we will not seek Him. As the psalmist writes in Psalm 42:1, our soul must get to the point in which it pants for God.
That’s what made Brother Lawrence, Frank Laubach, Thomas Kelly, and others successful in their quest to continually experience God’s presence.
It wasn’t greater levels of purity or sanctity.
It wasn’t a higher IQ or a special giftedness on their part.
It was their desire for God.
Their hearts first longed for the presence of God…then they experienced Him.
Though Brother Lawrence was a monk…he was uneducated about theology. He was Nicolas Herman…a common man who gave himself to God.
Experiencing God on an ongoing basis is not about being a super-saint…it is about desiring Him.
Seek…and you shall find.
His presence fills the universe and is available to all who seek Him…seek Him with their whole heart.
Becoming aware of the continual presence of God doesn’t require a seminary education. It doesn’t require a certain IQ. It doesn’t even require a certain level of holiness…though holiness will develop as you draw close to Him.
Those who find Him are those who seek Him.
That’s an invitation open to all…
We can either be physicians who allow the world to dictate how we should live our lives…or we can be physicians who daily surrender our lives to Him.
It will require effort on our part to bring us back into the awareness of His presence.
We will do better some days than others…
He will lead…we simply must follow.
Prayer: Lord, help me increase my desire for You!
