Another important role of the Holy Spirit is to bear witness to us that we belong to the family of God. I remember when 40 years ago, I gave my life to the Lord Jesus, I knew that I truly belonged to Him. Initially, I couldn’t explain how I knew, until later when I discovered this verse.
When we come to true faith in Jesus Christ and are indwelled by the Holy Spirit, He testifies to our spirit that we are now His children.
In those intervening 40 years, I’ve encountered many individuals who were very involved in church and religious activities, but had significant doubts about their eternal destiny. I believe there are two reasons for those doubts.
First, those doubts may be valid. Attendance in church or involvement in religious activity does not make us a member of the body of Christ.
Faith that submits and trusts in Christ is what makes us a member of His body.
I’ve seen many occasions where someone with years of church involvement finally makes a true confession of faith and after a long delay becomes a true believer in Christ.
The second reason is that by virtue of wrong teaching and unwarranted guilt, true believers are led to doubt their membership in the body of Christ.
Legalism has been rampant in the church since the days of Paul when Jewish believers insisted that any new convert be circumcised.
Today legalism can put other requirements in addition to faith in order to be accepted into the family of God. These requirements are unbiblical and dangerous.
All that is required for a person to become a member of the Body of Christ is for that person to believe that Jesus died for them, and place their trust in Christ, asking forgiveness for their sins.
Anything more is legalism and false teaching.
If you are a member of the body of Christ, you have the indwelling Holy Spirit who will bear witness of that fact to your spirit. If you have been questioning your membership in the body, take the time to seek the witness of the Holy Spirit.
If the witness doesn’t come…talk to someone who exhibits the fruit of the Spirit and take the necessary steps…soon.
Prayer: Lord, show me my eternal position…today.
