Your Spiritual Gifts

Spiritual gifts“Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed…to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 Cor. 12: 1,7 (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

Audio              (3:24)

The Holy Spirit gifts everyone He indwells.

“…to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit…”.

This gifting is a reflection of how God created you. The gifting may appear as a natural talent, but its ultimate source is Him…not you.

Giftings are usually revealed in the course of service within the Body of Christ. As new believers become more involved in fellowship and service, they often discover new abilities and talents.

These spiritual gifts may manifest themselves in our practice of medicine or they may become evident as we seek to serve others outside of medicine.

Later in this chapter, Paul warns of a temptation we face as we become aware of our spiritual gifts.

We may value one spiritual gift over another.

The Corinthians were doing that, and it caused some within the church to question whether they really belonged because they didn’t have certain gifts. Paul answers that accusation using the analogy of the human body and pointing out that not everyone can be the eye or ear of the body.

In addition to the temptation of valuing one gift over another, we in healthcare face other temptations.

First, we may assume that our spiritual gifting lies solely within the profession of medicine. In doing so we may fail to recognize spiritual gifts given to us to be used outside of medicine.

The gifts of the Spirit are given to build up the body of Christ…not our professional career.

Second, we may get so caught up in the practice of medicine that we don’t allow the necessary time to exercise our spiritual gifts. We may minimize spiritual gifts such as evangelism or discipleship.

Our spiritual gifts can then become atrophied either from lack of recognition or lack of use.

We can avoid these temptations if we take adequate time to explore our giftings with others within our fellowship making sure we expose ourselves to different environments of service including local and overseas missions.

We experience our greatest joy when we use the gifts the Spirit gives us for the good of those around us.

Discover your spiritual gifts…and use them!

Prayer: Holy Spirit, show me how you have gifted me!
