Desiring spiritual gifts

Hands and light“Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts…”. 1 Cor. 14:1 (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

Audio              (4:37)

Each person who has received salvation through Jesus Christ and has become a member of the Body of Christ has been given one or more spiritual gifts.

However, many believers have not discovered their spiritual gift…often because they have not earnestly sought after their gift. Their desires and attention have been on earthly things…not spiritual.

In Conformed to His Image, Ken Boa gives 6 suggestions for discovering your spiritual gifts, with each suggestion beginning with the letter a.

First we are to ask God to show us our spiritual gifts.

Since the Lord has given us these gifts, He naturally desires for us to know what they are and begin to use them for His glory.

Second, we need to increase our awareness of what our potential spiritual gifts could be.

There are 3 lists of spiritual gifts found in the New Testament. They are found in Romans 12:4-8, 1 Cor. 12:4-10, and Ephesians 4:11,12. These lists are not exhaustive, so we should recognize that the Holy Spirit may decide to impart gifts not included within these lists.

Third, we need to aspire to use our gifts as Paul tells Timothy in 1 Tim. 3:1.

We should take into account our own aspirations and the fact that God may be working through those aspirations to lead us into our spiritual gifts.

Fourth, we need to be engaged in some form of activity so that we can discover our spiritual gifts through trial and error.

Someone who is not involved in any ministry will have no opportunity to discover how God has gifted them.

Fifth, as we engage in various activities, we should closely evaluate our ability.

Our evaluation should incorporate not just our own opinion, but also the opinion of other members of the body of Christ. When God gifts us, He imparts ability in that area.

Finally, we should pay attention to where and how we receive affirmation. As we begin using our spiritual gifts, others will notice and give us confirmation of God’s gifting in that particular area.

Are you aware of how God has particularly gifted you to impact the world for His glory?

If not…these suggestions will help you make that discovery.

Prayer: Lord show me how you have specifically gifted me to bring You the glory You deserve.
