“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.” 1 Pet. 4:10,11 (ESV)
Spiritual gifts have many benefits for us and can bring pleasure to us as we engage them. But we must never forget the ultimate purpose of our spiritual gifts.
Spiritual gifts are given to us to bring God glory.
They are not given to enhance our stature, our visibility, or our sense of worth to God.
Spiritual gifts are not for us…they are for the Body of Christ and His glory.
As this truth becomes deeply known to us, we will avoid the dangers of spiritual gifts…and we will fully enjoy the benefits of spiritual gifts.
One of the benefits of using our spiritual gifts is the pleasure they bring as we contribute to something and Someone greater than ourselves.
A sense of purpose brings pleasure, especially as we see God work through our gifts in the lives of those around us.
An additional benefit is the joy we gain from knowing that we are doing exactly what God wants us to do!
We sense that pleasure periodically in medicine as the Lord allows us to make a difference in the lives of our patients. Discovering and working within our spiritual gifts allows us to participate with the Lord in the important work He is doing around us and live with a sense of fulfillment.
That’s not easy with medicine today, trapped by EHR’s, contractual agreements, and loss of freedom in decision-making. It requires us to step back and remind ourselves of what we truly are living for.
We live not for ourselves…but for Him.
We live to carry out His will…by using the gifts He has given us.
We live to serve Him by serving others…
And in return, He gives us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
The fruit of the Spirit…
Prayer: Holy Spirit, remind me today of my true purpose for living…to serve You through serving those You bring into my path today.
