Fruit is produced by a plant or tree for one purpose…new life.
Each piece of fruit contains the seeds of new life that are meant to be planted and germinate.
The primary purpose of the fruit of the Spirit is to draw others to Christ.
There are many obvious secondary benefits of spiritual fruit for believers in Christ. Who doesn’t want a life filled with love, joy, peace, and patience? These are qualities that every person seeks, whether they know it or not.
These qualities are available to every Christian in increasing measure through ongoing surrender to the Holy Spirit.
But these benefits are secondary…not primary.
Because every person consciously or unconsciously seeks the qualities of spiritual fruit, they will be drawn to them.
Manifesting spiritual fruit in our lives can be a powerful testimony of the reality and the winsomeness of the Lord.
It is when the actions and attitudes of our life match our words of testimony that we are able to draw the attention of nonbelievers around us.
They often have heard the words.
Rarely do they witness the fruit of the Spirit.
What the world needs is more people showing the difference Christ makes in our lives by vibrantly exhibiting the fruit of the spirit.
Because the fruit of the Spirit are not natural…to exhibit them we must allow the Holy Spirit to come through us.
Watchman Nee called it The Release of the Spirit and has a book by that title.
The basic premise is that to release the Spirit, we must surrender our outer man…our own will and desire at that moment.
It is the living out of what Paul mentions in Gal. 2:20 where he writes that it is no longer he (Paul) who lives…but Christ who lives in him.
It is a process…not a step.
The more we allow Christ through the Holy Spirit to live through us…the more we will exhibit the fruit of the Spirit.
The more we exhibit the fruit of the Spirit…the more others will be drawn to ask the how…which allows us to spread the seed and pray for germination.
Prayer: Lord…help me to surrender to You and release Your Spirit today.
