“For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.” Rom. 7:22,23 (ESV)
Paul delights in the law of God, which he recognizes within his inner being. When we come to Christ and receive the indwelling Holy Spirit, we delight as well in what the Lord teaches us.
But Paul also recognized something else going on deep inside him.
Paul found he was at war with himself.
The law of God was at war with what Paul termed…his “members”.
Paul recognized that sin still dwelled within some deep part of himself.
That deep part or “member” has also been termed our flesh, our old nature, or our sinful nature.
Regardless…Paul exposes the truth that even after coming to faith in Christ, deep within we each contain a tendency toward sin.
Prior to salvation, we were fully controlled by that sin nature.
Salvation doesn’t remove that sin nature.
Salvation frees us from that sin nature.
Salvation places the Holy Spirit within us…and starts the war.
The war will continue until we see Him face to face.
We will each fight that war in different ways…over different things.
But there is always one common theme…control.
Control is the battlefield.
Control over money…
Control over pleasure…
Control over desires…
As Christian physicians, at a deep level we are at war with ourselves. The eruptions of that war result in frustration, anxiety, anger, and unhappiness.
There is only one way to achieve peace.
Surrender control to Him…
Surrender control of your budget…your career…your practice…your life.
The concept is simple…but it is not easy.
It must be done in small steps…steps taken daily over a long period of time.
What is the source of your anxiety…your frustration today?
Somewhere it has to do with control.
Surrender it to Him…
He knows what is best for you because He loves you far beyond what you can imagine.
We all ultimately want peace within ourselves. Surrendering control to the Holy Spirit brings a ceasefire…and allows us to more fully enjoy His blessings.
Prayer: Lord help me see the source of the battle I’m fighting today…and help me surrender to You.
