“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” 1 John 5:4,5 (ESV)
Eventually, everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world through their faith. Though the world wants to draw us in, because of our faith…our destiny is heaven.
But as followers of Jesus, we should desire to overcome the world in tangible ways long before our transition through death into heaven.
Our desire should be to overcome the world today in greater measure than yesterday.
To overcome the very real temptations of the world, we must turn our affections away from the world.
We must turn our affections to the Lord.
We must actively seek to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.
Overcoming the world is achieved in part by directing our affections…our heart.
We have control over how we direct our affections.
We decide who and what we will love.
The key to directing our affections to the Lord…is remembering.
Remembering who we were before we found Him.
Remembering all that He has done for us.
Remembering all He is still doing for us.
Remembering His blessings…
Remembering His grace…
Remembering His mercy…
Remembering His gifts to us that allowed us to get in and through medical school and residency.
Remembering His gifts that enable us to practice medicine.
Remembering His gifts of family.
As we remind ourselves of all these things, a spirit of thankfulness should arise within us.
And thankfulness…leads to love.
Take some time to reflect on who and what you’ve loved lately.
Is that how you want to love for the rest of your life?
Decide today who and what you want to love.
Turn your heart to Him…and you will overcome the world.
Prayer: Lord, help me remember and see all that you have done for me. Help me not be distracted from remembering so that I can direct my heart toward You.
