Our struggle is against the spiritual forces of evil

BlazingArchon“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”         Eph. 6:12 (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

Another tactic of Satan’s is to fade into the background. He knows he is more efficient in his work if we forget that he exists. He may even cause us to believe our spiritual battle is against the people of this world.

Paul reminds us that our struggle is not against people…its against evil spirits.

It’s easy to forget this…and focus on the person being manipulated by evil. We forget that we were once lost and also under the wrath of God. We didn’t “earn” our way out of that position…we accepted the free gift of Christ’s sacrifice.

But in the busy increasingly competitive world of medicine, we can easily begin to think that our struggle is against insurance companies, hospital bureaucracy, or against government run healthcare.

Behind all the evil in the world is a well-organized spiritual hierarchy…overseen by Satan himself. We don’t fully understand it…nor is it necessary to fully understand it.

We simply need to remember that it exists…and that Jesus has already conquered it.

When we get encounter evil in the form of injustice, obvious sin, or blatant disregard for any moral standard, remember there is a spiritual force behind that evil.

It’s not the person we are dealing with.

I often forget this in my work to raise awareness among healthcare professionals of the issue of human trafficking. In my study and preparation, I often read or hear the stories of trafficking victims and continue to be amazed by the evil that exists in this world.

Yes…human traffickers are evil…but they are motivated and empowered by an unseen evil force. They are created in the image of God. They have made many wrong choices and are actively participating in evil.

But they are still capable of being grasped by God’s grace.

Remember this as you encounter domestic violence and child abuse within your particular area of practice.

They are evil and terribly wrong…but the cause is far more than the person involved.

The source is none other than Satan himself.

Prayer: Lord, help me remember the source of evil in this world…and the only answer to that evil is You.
