“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place…” Eph. 6:14
Last week I began to examine our spiritual armor beginning with the belt of truth. Today I turn to the next piece of armor we need…the breastplate of righteousness.
We must remember that this is not our righteousness…it is His righteousness.
Our righteousness is faulty…
Putting on our righteousness would be like putting on a breastplate that is rusted, weak and about to fall apart.
It wouldn’t withstand even one blow.
But as followers of Jesus…we have His perfect and complete righteousness. In Philippians 3:9 Paul writes “…not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is by faith in Christ- the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.”
When the breastplate of righteousness is in place…that is when we remember that we have Christ’s righteousness…we are protected from the accusations of the enemy…accusations against our unrighteousness.
As followers of Jesus who have placed their faith in Jesus…God the Father no longer sees our unrighteousness…He sees the righteousness of His Son.
Our unrighteousness no longer matters…
The theological term is imputation…Christ’s righteousness bestowed on us.
Remembering that we now possess His righteousness protects us from attack…it is defensive.
It protects us from accusations of failure…of weakness…of sin.
This doesn’t mean we are free to sin as we desire…we are always to strive for obedience.
It does mean that our inevitable failures will not be held against us.
We are to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. We are to desire and pursue righteousness to the best of our ability.
But we will never achieve His righteousness in this world.
In this week of Thanksgiving…give Him thanks for His sacrifice that enabled His righteousness to cover you.
Prayer: Lord, remind me that I no longer have to earn my standing before You. Remind me that You already see me covered with the righteousness of Jesus.
