In addition to all this…the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and the sandals of preparation with the Gospel of peace…we are to take up the shield of faith.
As with the breastplate, the shield is a defensive weapon. It also protects us from the attack of the enemy.
The breastplate of righteousness protects us from the enemy’s accusations that arise from our unrighteousness because the breastplate of righteousness contains Christ’s righteousness.
The shield of faith is necessary to protect us from a different type of attack from the enemy.
The shield of faith protects us from accusations that bring doubt.
Accusations that cause us to doubt our competence within medicine…
Accusations that cause us to doubt our competence in medical ministry…
Accusations that cause us to doubt God’s plan…
Accusations that cause us to doubt…God.
Paul tells us that these arrows are “flaming”.
The purpose of flaming arrows is to start fires. Doubt is like a fire because it consumes and destroys. Doubt consumes and destroys our belief in God.
Doubt causes us to question God…but also ourselves.
Doubt melts away the foundation of our relationship with God.
Since doubt is the opposite of faith…it must be extinguished with faith.
Faith is more than belief…it is trust.
We take up the shield of faith as we fully trust God and His promises in the Bible. To strengthen our faith, it’s also very helpful look back on our life to see God’s faithfulness to us and to His promises.
God is faithful and worthy to be trusted.
One very effective flaming arrow in the field of medicine is the lawsuit. Even the threat of lawsuit brings flaming arrows of doubt.
They can be devastating.
When those inevitable flaming arrows cause you to doubt something about God…remember His promises.
Remember His promises by reviewing those promises in Scripture…
Remember His faithfulness to you…
Recognize that doubt is a tactic of the enemy…and God has given you the shield of faith to extinguish that doubt.
Prayer: Lord, help me to recognize doubt as a tactic of the enemy and to be effective in taking up the shield of faith…so that I can bring you glory and honor today.
