Good News of Great Joy

angelandshepherdsloop“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them…and the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”                     Luke 2:8-11 (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

In this familiar passage announcing the birth of Jesus to the shepherds, the angel gives us insight into this amazing event.

There has been a birth…a very unusual birth.

The angel describes the baby in two ways.

First He is a Savior, and second, He is Christ the Lord.

The shepherds may have expected the first description, but to have Him referred also as “Lord” or God must have greatly puzzled them. It remains difficult for us to fathom today.

God became a baby.

How can God become a baby?

Precisely…

As unfathomable as that is…God did become a baby and the shepherds are told that the birth of Jesus is “good news of great joy”.

It’s not just good news…it’s good news that should bring great joy.

We should be joyful that we are with family and friends…but we should feel great joy because God has come as a baby.

Finally, the shepherds are told that “…unto you”…this child is born. This child was born “to us” and for us.

The enemy has undertaken many strategies to distract us from these central truths including the many attempts to remove all reference to Christ during this “Christ”mas season. This has also become a season known for its busyness rather than the simplicity and reverence of the original birth.

As you spend time today celebrating the birth of Jesus with family and friends, remember that God our Savior became a baby to save us… from ourselves and from our sin.

In the midst of celebration with family and friends…try to spend some time today reflecting on how His birth has impacted your life and whether it is still impacting your life and profession as it should.

And celebrate the good news of great joy…Jesus the Son of God became a baby to dwell among us!

Prayer: Lord, thank You for becoming the God-man who would die for me!
