Satisfying our need for love

Living-Free“Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.”                      Ps. 90:14    (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

Audio              (1:53)

I have been writing about our God-placed need for love and acceptance. I have mentioned various means we use to satisfy that need, both natural and unnatural, but still illegitimate in the eyes of God.

These illegitimate means bring some satisfaction for our need for love…but not the deep satisfaction that brings joy.

We are only able to rejoice…experience joy…when we satisfy our need for love with God’s love.

Only God’s love is able to reach the depths of our being and release joy.

God is waiting for us to come to that recognition…which comes as we examine our illegitimate means to gain love and intimacy…and realize they don’t bring joy.

If we want true joy…the Psalmist models what we are to do.

The Psalmist asks God to satisfy that need for love.

He asks God to satisfy that need…in the morning.

Perhaps it is because in the morning…at the beginning of the day…we have not yet taken up our sinful methods of meeting our need for love.

Each morning we have the opportunity to drink deeply from His love and satisfy our thirst.

If we satisfy the thirst of our hearts with His love early in the morning, we will be less inclined through the day to return to our sinful methods of satisfying that need.

It’s a process…so it will take time.

It doesn’t happen in the first day, week, or even the first month.

But slowly…over time…we can learn to drink deeply from His love and find our attachment to illegitimate sources of love begin to lessen and change.

Then we can rejoiceexperience joy…a major part of the abundant life.

Prayer: Lord help me to recognize how I’ve sought to satisfy my need for love through wrong means and teach me to drink deeply from Your love each morning.
