God’s loincloth

Loincloth“For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the Lord, that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen.” Jeremiah 13:11 (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

Audio              (3:15)

This chapter of Jeremiah relates a very unusual word picture of how God viewed His relationship with Israel.

His desire was for Israel to cling to Him…adhere to Him…be joined to Him…just as a loincloth clings to the waist of a man.

God could have chosen any piece of clothing to illustrate this relationship.

He could have chosen the robe worn by most non-military…

Yet God chose the loincloth…the most intimate piece of clothing worn by men and women.

God chose the equivalent of underwear to describe how intimate He wanted to relate to His people.

Astounding…

We know from Romans 11, that we as Gentiles have been grafted into Israel, so

as followers of Jesus we are included as His people.

God’s desire to relate to us hasn’t changed…

God didn’t say He wanted us to relate to Him as His overcoat.

God didn’t say He wanted us to relate to Him as His tunic.

No…God specifically said He wanted us to relate to Him as His loincloth.

God doesn’t want a long distance relationship with us.

God doesn’t want a part time relationship with us.

God wants an intimate relationship with us…the most intimate possible.

It is hard for us to understand this…accept this.

For some…it scares us.

For others…it doesn’t make sense.

Why would God want me to love Him so intimately?

Because He loves us so intimately…

The really sad part is that Israel chose to reject God.

They chose to reject Him for other gods.

They passed over an intimate relationship with the Creator of the universe…for

idols made of wood and stone.

Ironically…we can also pass over an intimate relationship with the Creator for a different kind of idol.

Wealth…

Security…

A successful career in medicine…

Don’t make the same mistake Israel did.

Make it a priority to cultivate an intimate relationship with the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, help me see the idols in my life that draw me from an intimate relationship with You.

A great message for we who are tempted daily to detour from the most important.

Hi Alton…it’s a constant temptation that we all face…and therefore need constant reminders of what is most important. Thanks for reading and sharing!
