In today’s verse, Paul begins to show us how we fall prey to our idols. He tells us that we exchange the truth for a lie. We have believed the lie that love must come from another person or family member. Even worse, we sometimes believe that illicit love is better than God’s love.
We have believed the lie that our worth is derived from what we do in this world, or through the type and amount of possessions we can accumulate. We have placed our professional lives on the altar believing that if we are valued by the world as good healthcare professionals, we will achieve greater worth.
We have believed the lie that we can increase our impact by listening to our own hearts rather than listening to the inner voice of the Lord.
Yet, here is the truth…
God loves us more completely and deeply than we can imagine. We are His beloved. He has adopted us as His son or His daughter. There is no greater love in the universe than our Father’s love for us.
Further, God’s love for us gives us our worth. We are princes and princesses dearly loved by the King! As the Creator of the universe, it is He who bestows worth and His love imparts our dignity to us, making us more valuable than even the stars.
Finally, He has created us for the impact we so deeply desire. He has given us specific giftings to undertake works which He prepared before we were even created. Works that will give us impact that will last throughout eternity.
For us in healthcare, we must be careful that we don’t worship and serve medicine by allowing it to drive us to achieve more. And as we achieve financial success, we must also be careful to resist the lie that our worth is found in the abundance of our possessions.
These lies will not bring us shalom…peace with ourselves.
Only God can do that.
Prayer: Lord show me the lies I’m believing and help me see the truth in You!
