Ezekiel 6:10a (ESV)
Ezekiel was a prophet to the Jewish people who had been taken into captivity after being conquered by the Babylonians. They were conquered because they were unfaithful to God and followed after false gods.
God used the terrible suffering of being removed from their homes and homeland under the Babylonians to get the attention of His people. There was punishment involved, but there was also something more important.
God wanted to be known again by His people.
The phrase contained in today’s verse is found 86 times in the book of Ezekiel alone.
God wants to be known by His people.
As we struggle to resist our false gods of wealth, notoriety and worldly success, we need to remember that God wants us to know Him.
He doesn’t just want us to know about Him…He wants us to know Him.
It isn’t because of some egotistical need that God wants us to know Him. He wants us to know Him because He is the source of true abundant life…joy…and peace.
To the extent that we become distracted from knowing Him by our false gods, we lose the ability to experience the abundant life He has for us. It is a life filled with true love, true worth, and true impact.
We are not only to know God, but we are to know that He is the LORD.
He is the Creator of all that we see, feel, and touch. He is our Creator.
He is completely in control of every electron…of every atom…of every molecule that exists in the universe. He knows not only the number of hairs on our head…but also the number of atoms in those hairs.
And this God…who is beyond our fathoming…wants to be known by us.
He wants a relationship with us…for us to love Him with all our hearts, soul, mind and strength.
He’s told us His story in the Bible…
He’s waiting for us to respond…
Will we turn from our idols and move toward Him?
Prayer: Lord, give me the strength to resist my idols and turn my face toward You…to know that You are the LORD.”
