God is love

gods-hands-holding-child“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

Last week I wrote about some of the ways we wrongly view God. This week I want to begin writing about developing a true picture of God.

I start with the words of the Apostle John…God is love.

We just celebrated Valentines Day, our culture’s holiday for romantic love. God’s love differs from romantic love in several ways. One important difference is that romantic love waxes and wanes depending on our mood and how well the person we love is treating us.

Romantic love is conditional.

God’s love is unconditional.

God’s love does not depend on our performance or on how much we love Him.

God’s love simply is…

C.S. Lewis once wrote, “The Christian thinks that any good he does comes from the Christ-life inside him. He does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us.”

Notice the difference. A true picture of God is that God doesn’t love us because we are good…God makes us good because He loves us.

This concept is so critical for us to take in and remember. God’s love is not dependent upon any characteristic we possess or fail to possess. He loves us because He is love. We don’t earn His love through performance. His love transforms us to be able to perform.

As I’ve written before, we need this truth to percolate from our heads into our hearts before it really makes a difference in how we live our lives.

Spend some time meditating on the fact that you are loved by God and consider some of the ways He is currently working to make you more like Christ.

Prayer: Lord help me fully sense Your unconditional love for me.
