In today’s verse, the writer of Hebrews informs us of another characteristic of faith. Faith is not only the conviction of things not seen; it is also the assurance of things yet to come.
Living by faith is living for something in the future.
For the faith-filled person, life is much more than what is here and now…it is also looking ahead toward a life yet to come that is far richer than we can imagine.
However, the faith-filled person is not someone who lives in some personal dream world. They live fully in this world, aware of the joys and disappointments that this life brings.
The difference is where their hope lies.
The hope of the faith-filled person lies with a God who has promised an eternal existence with Him in unimaginable joy. Those without faith have nothing to hope for beyond what is in this world. Their hope is limited to what is seen and the brief promise of what may be accomplished in this life.
The faith-filled person does not expect all of their desires to be met in the present, so they learn to live in the midst of unsatisfied yearnings. They live in expectation of something far better than what is experienced in this world. They are not surprised by disappointment.
Therefore, the faith-filled person does not attempt to satisfy all their longings in this world, but accepts that some longings will only be satisfied in the future. They are not completely dependent on their immediate world or on those around them. They avoid the mindset of immediate gratification that is so strongly pressed into us by the world.
Depression comes when we believe our desires will never be met.
Anxiety comes when our desires are threatened.
Peace comes when we recognize all our desires will be met in the Lord in heaven.
The faith-filled person who successfully places their desires on the Lord avoids depression and anxiety because they are confident that all of their desires will eventually be fulfilled in the next life.
This is the goal of every true believer…to place our desires and hope fully on the Lord.
It is a process that takes a lifetime.
Prayer: Lord, help me to place my hope and desire fully in You.
