Seek Him first…

Called to Abide“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”                Mt. 6:33 (ESV)

Chapter         (ESV)

Audio              (4:55)

Each day, we have the freedom and privilege to make various choices in our life. Even the disciples of Jesus had the capacity to make choices in their lives. Where we have the freedom to make choices, we also have responsibility for those choices.

In today’s verse, Jesus tells us not only to seek the kingdom of God…but to seek it first.

Practically speaking, what does seeking the kingdom first look like?

We can categorize our choices, and today I want to address the categories of time, talents and treasure.

We can choose to use our time, talents, and treasure for the kingdom of God, or we can choose to use them in other ways…such as for ourselves.

For instance…regarding our time. We may not have the freedom to choose how we use every hour of the day; we certainly have the freedom to choose how to use part of the day.

Choosing the kingdom first means choosing to spend time with God first whenever possible. We avoid the temptation to quickly dive into daily activities and instead choose to begin the day with Him.

Choosing the kingdom first means seeking ways to use our God-given talents for the kingdom first, before we use them for ourselves. Choosing the kingdom first means setting aside our tithe to the Lord before we set up the rest of our budget.

When we choose the kingdom first… Jesus adds a promise.

He tells us that when we seek the kingdom first… all necessary things will be added.

When we begin the day by spending time with God, we are more likely to live the rest of the day aware of His presence. When we offer our talents to Him first, we are more likely to end up doing His will in our lives. When we give back to Him first out of our financial abundance, we are more likely to be content with what He has given us.

We will not be able to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength until we also learn to seek Him first…and that can begin or continue…today.

Prayer: Lord help me seek You first with my time, talent, and treasure!
