The Way to Wisdom

Prayer“My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding— indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.”

Proverbs 2:1-5 (NIV)

Chapter         (NIV)

Audio              (1:53)

The writer of Proverbs points us toward wisdom by telling us that the first step on the path to wisdom is to accept his words. Since God inspires all the words of Scripture, the writer means that wisdom is found in the words of the entire Bible.

To accept the words of Scripture means far more than simply reading them. It means reading them with an attitude of recognition and openness to be changed by those words.

One of the spiritual dangers we face as physicians and healthcare professionals is to assume our expertise in medicine also gives us expertise in living life. Expertise in medicine and expertise in life are two completely different things.

Expertise in medicine is competence.

Expertise in living life is wisdom.

The reality is that none of us are experts in living life. Each of us has a great deal to learn from Scripture. We must guard against an attitude of knowing how to live life well simply because we can practice medicine well.

We must fight to gain and maintain an attitude of humility…in spite of how we are lifted up by our profession.

To accept the words of Scripture mean being willing to change our life when Scripture leads us to…even when it goes against our natural inclinations.

Growing in wisdom thus starts with having the right attitude of humility that acknowledges that we can do better in how we live life.

It is an attitude of willingness to make changes in our life as God leads.

Those attitudes should remain throughout our entire lives.

If we remain humble in our awareness of our need to grow and willing to make the necessary changes as He leads…we will grow in wisdom.

God guarantees it.

Prayer: Lord help me fully realize my ongoing need to learn from You…my God and my Savior. Help me also be willing to make the changes You see necessary in my life.
