God and work 2

gloved-hands-before-surgery-190x155“May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.” Psalm 90:17 (NIV)

Chapter         (NIV)

Audio              (2:03)

Practically, there are 4 issues within our work that we need to continually turn over to the Lord…our worries, our frustrations, our rewards, and our goals.

Regarding worries, in medicine we can worry about patient outcomes, complications, lawsuits and countless other things. But it’s critical to remember that there is only so much we can control in medicine. We control the level in which we practice medicine with integrity, competence, and compassion.

We can’t control patient outcome or patient reaction.

These areas we leave to God.

As a surgeon, today’s verse was always especially meaningful to me. It helped remind me that it is God who is truly able to establish the work of my hands. I may at times fool myself that I am in control of my professional life…but there is a different reality…God is ultimately in control.

The more completely I understand this simple fact…the less reason for worry.

If we continue to daily surrender our lives to Him…He will carry out His plan in His way and in His time…without us having to worry.

Prayer: Lord remind me daily that ultimately You are in control and Your plan is unfolding as You desire.
